It was my understanding, that yoga can be one of the worst ways to lose weight, like, ever.

Some of the gentle and restorative styles, and even classes that say they will move you, but really don’t, are going to burn about as many calories as taking a nap.

What many people don’t know (yet) is that, done right, yoga can also be one of the best for turning on the inner switches that cause weight loss and a higher metabolism. It all depends on exactly which type of yoga workout one chooses.

Luckily, I’ve done my homework and found a yoga type that targets weight loss or maintenance along with all the other benefits of a great yoga class.

If you bypass yoga because you’re more interested in firming your body than raising your consciousness, here’s a mind-body routine your muscles will love.

This fat-blasting yoga-inspired workout, designed by Beth Shaw, owner of YogaFit in Redondo Beach, CA, turns up the burn with multiple repetitions of each pose. In this yoga workout to lose fat, once you complete one pose, you flow directly to the next, with no resting between sequences. Yoga, when practiced in this vigorous style, works just as well as strength-training for shedding fat. The yoga workout to lose fat also makes your heart stronger and boosts cardiovascular fitness, found a study from the University of California, Davis. Practice regularly to stay slim, fit, and serene.

Workout BasicsReps and sequences Start by quickly inhaling and exhaling through your nose for 20 breaths. Then perform each sequence the specified number of times before moving on to the next without a rest. Aim for 4 or 5 workouts a week. What to Do: Watch the videos below to get a good summary of the poses. Beginning with 1. Sun Salutation. After you do 11. Bridge Pose, jump back to the 2. Plank, and restart the routine and finish it in its entirety. Concentrate on restricted respiration. If there is a minute hold too simple for all these exercises, add 30 seconds to raise the difficulty. Do this routine 3 times each week and switch your beginning foundation foot to revamp the work out.

Poses:

  • Sun Salutation- Paying homage to the Sun bring focus into your coming routine and helps transition. 2 repeats
  • Plank- Keep your CENTER tight. 1 minute
  • Down Dog Leg Lift – begin together with the right foot as your foundation.
  • Lunge- begin with all the right foot as your foundation. 1 minute
  • Warrior 1- begin with all the right foot as your foundation. 1 minute
  • Extended Side Angle- begin together with the left foot as your foundation. 1 minute
  • Tree Pose- Powerful legs! Begin together with the left foot as your foundation. 1 minute
  • Warrior 2- begin together with the left foot as your foundation. 1 minute
  • Plank- 1 minute
  • Bow Pose- 1 minute
  • Boat Pose- CORE tight! 1 minute
  • Happy Baby Pose- Let feel free and loose. Smile and say something favorable to yourself. 1 minute

Hands thumbs centered in your torso. Two breaths that are large in order to really feel your hands growing and you also inhale and exhale. Hands together upward directly in the atmosphere into a little Half Crescent Moon Pose and still. You greet the Sun to begin and you also bid good-bye to the Sun to finish.
